Matter All Around Us
The Three states of matter
Take a moment to look around. What do you see? Everything around you can be classified with one word. Everything around you is matter. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is made up of elements, and the smallest part of the elements are called atoms. These atoms determine which state matter has, and how the substances can be put together to make new substances.
The substances around you can be classified into three main groups; solid, liquid and gas. In a solid, the atoms are packed together very tightly and cannot move around freely. This means that a solid always has the same shape and size. Some examples of solids are your shoe, a cup or a book. If you heat a solid, it will begin to melt. The atoms will separate and move around and you will form a liquid.
Liquids are a state of matter that always has the same size, but changes its shape depending on where it is. Think about a glass of water. If you pour the water into your shoe, you will still have the same amount of water, but it will now have a different shape. If you make a liquid very cold, it will freeze and return to its solid state. Melting and freezing substances allow us to change the shape of a solid. This is how things made out of metal, like horseshoes are made.
If you heat a liquid and make it boil, it will begin to evaporate and become a gas. We sometimes forget that the air around us is a form of matter because we can’t see it. If you blow up a balloon, you can see that the gas inside takes up space and has mass. If you make gas cooler, it will condense and turn into a liquid. You can see condensation if you drink an ice-cold drink on a hot day. The drink cools the air around your glass and causes small drops of water to form.
