pre-Reading

Part Three

The race began and Muriel took off, just a few strokes behind Danny the Dolphin. She entered the abandoned treasure ship and turned to the right, swimming down to the lowest level of the ship, to start her search there. The first room she found was a bedroom, filled with bunk beds, closets and dressers. Muriel swam around the room and briskly pulled all of the drawers open. She looked under each of the beds and inside every closet and finally found a gold piece, underneath a shelf, carefully wrapped inside a shell. She pulled the shell open and cut her finger on its sharp edge.

The Big Race

Muriel gasped in pain and shook her finger angrily. She placed the gold piece in her bag and wrapped a piece of kelp around her finger. She continued swimming through the boat. The next room was a huge dining room, where four of the other contestants were already searching. Muriel hurried to the side wall and began to open the cupboards there. There was a piece of gold inside a dark green bowl. Muriel grabbed it and while she put it in her bag, noticed another piece of gold, shining in the lamp above her. She swam up and reached out her hand, but Christina was right behind her. Christina’s claws were longer than Muriel’s arms, and she grabbed the piece of gold more quickly than Muriel.

Muriel flipped backward and swung her strong tail toward Christina. The crab sailed sideways toward the door while Muriel swam in the opposite direction. She saw another piece of gold tied into a large napkin. Danny tried to get the gold piece, but he didn’t have any hands, so he couldn’t untie the knot. Muriel reached for the gold piece and effortlessly untied the napkin. She placed the gold piece into her bag and moved into the next room. This room was a huge kitchen, full of cupboards and shelves where things could be hidden. Muriel started frantically turning over cups and pots and bowls. She finally found a fourth piece of gold inside a pot full of marbles. She saw her last piece of gold on a shelf on the other side of the kitchen. But Danny saw the gold piece first and he was able to swim to it more quickly.

“Muriel, you’re bleeding!” Danny yelled. “You have to be careful or we might find a-” “Shark!” a voice behind them screamed. All of the contestants looked toward the door, where a shark suddenly appeared. It swam hungrily toward them. The shark swam into the kitchen, making a hole in the wall, where Muriel saw a gold piece fly out and fall on the floor. She waited for the shark to pass and then bravely swam to the wall, picked up the gold piece and started to swim toward the finish line. Muriel left the boat, but then she heard Christina cry, “Help me. Please! I’m stuck!” The shark was swimming toward Christina, who was inside a box. Muriel turned back boldly. While Danny swam for the finish line, Muriel swam in a circle around the shark. When the shark moved upward to grab her, she dropped down, grabbed Christina and threw the box at the shark. Then she swam as fast as she could toward the finish line.

Muriel cut her hand on a shell.

Muriel saved Christina from a shark.

Muriel practiced for the race with her friend.

Muriel decided she wanted to go to the University.
