How can Muriel win a scholarship?

Part Two
In the weeks before the race, Sandy the seahorse watched some of the other creatures practice and gave Muriel advice. “Cristina has two really long claws, so she can grab pieces of gold that are in small spots more easily than you.” “Danny is the fastest dolphin I have ever seen,” Sandy continued. “You have to get your gold pieces faster than him, because you’ll never beat him in the final sprint.”
The Big Race
Sandy invited Muriel to her house every day after school. Muriel waited while her friend hid items around the house and then gave her clues to find them. Sandy showed Muriel all of the possible hiding spots she might find on the ship. Sandy tied a coin into the curtain with such a difficult knot that no one could untie it. They had to put a lamp in front of the curtain and hope that Sandy’s mom didn’t see it.
The day before the race, Muriel decided to relax and swam up to her favorite flat rock on the surface. She gracefully pulled herself onto the rock and lay back to think and try to relax. She saw a splash in the water next to her and a few seconds later, Georgina appeared. Muriel smiled broadly at her sister. “Are you nervous?” Georgina asked. “I know that I prepared properly,” Muriel said. “But what if I don’t win? What will I do if I can’t go to the University?”
Georgina smiled gently at her sister. “I think you have a good chance of winning. But even if you don’t, you’ll find something to do.” Muriel frowned at her sister and replied angrily, “I don’t want to do something, I want to go to Treasure Trove University.” Before her sister could reply, Muriel pushed herself off of the rock and furiously swam away, swimming much more quickly than her sister could. She didn't want her sister to see how scared she was that she wouldn't win the race.
