The Big Race

Muriel pushed her hair out of her face and pulled her ponytail tight. She looked to her right and saw Christina, the crab whose long claws made her the best grabber. Danny, the dolphin who almost always swam more quickly than everyone else, was on her right. Muriel took a deep breath and looked forward, determined to swim faster than she ever had. The whistle blew and everyone took off. The race had begun!

This race was very important to all of the athletes at Underwater Cove Secondary School. It was the event that would determine who would win the scholarship to Treasure Trove University. The race was held at the bottom of the sea, and the athletes had to make their way through a sunken treasure ship. There were gold pieces hidden all over the ship, and whoever found five pieces of gold and then swam to the finish line first was the winner.

Muriel’s oldest sister, Georgina, started at Treasure Trove University last year, and she happily told Muriel all about the school. After listening to her sister, Muriel was determined to attend the university as well, but her grades were not good enough to get into the school. Georgina was much better at math and science than Muriel, and she studied more frequently as well. She completed her homework more carefully and passed her exams effortlessly.

Muriel did her homework more slowly than her sister and was frequently jealous that her sister was so much smarter. The only thing that Muriel could do well was swim faster than Georgina. So, when she heard about the athletic scholarship, she began practicing daily. She practiced untying knots, climbing ropes, spinning out of small holes, and catching objects as she swam by them. She was sure that she had prepared more carefully than her competition. She was determined to win the race and go to the university. Muriel told her friend, Sandy, a beautiful seahorse, about her goal. Sandy decided to help Muriel.
