Do humans need to eat meat?
Prereading
The meat industry slaughters over 300 million cows a year.
Reading
slaughters
Yesterday I was watching a documentary about meat production and the treatment of animals and I realised that I need to become a vegetarian. I refuse to participate in the industry that raises animals in terrible conditions and then slaughters them so that people can eat them. There are plenty of other options out there.
teacher tips
One cow can release 500 litres of methane every day.
Reading
methane
Another problem with the meat industry is the enormous amount of pollution it causes. Huge parts of important rainforests are cut down so that cattle can be raised. Feeding the animals uses a huge amount of water and grains and the animals also emit methane gas, which is terrible for the environment. If everyone stopped eating meat, it would have a huge impact on global warming.
Organic farming has become very popular recently.
Reading
organic
I will go this weekend to the organic food market to buy fresh vegetables from local farmers that were grown without pesticides. I will also buy a bread machine, so that I can bake my own fresh, nutritious bread every day. I plan on starting a vegetable garden in my backyard, as well. My goal is to eat only items that I can grow myself or are grown in my community.
Legumes are a good source of protein.
Reading
legumes
Since I will now be eating only plant-based foods, I will have to make sure that my diet includes enough protein and vitamins. Beans and legumes are a good source of protein, so I will have to learn some new recipes to cook, so that I don’t have to eat the same thing every day. I am excited about this diet. I think I will really make an impact on the environment as well as save animals from suffering.

The cows got out and walked through the crops, so we won't have any to sell this year. It is a good thing we decided to grow crops this year, because people will pay more for food without pesticides. The cows we raise are not for , so we don't have to worry about killing them. But they still do emit a lot of gas, which is bad for the environment.
