How could war change the food supply?

teacher tips

Reading

rationing
In the 20th century, food supply was impacted greatly by the World Wars. Many countries had to create a system of rationing, and families were forced to be creative, in order to feed many people
with very little food. The majority of the meat was given to the soldiers, and food shortages were common across Europe and America.

Reading

brand
After the First World War, new food products became available around the world. They began to transport fruit. Companies started to brand their food and advertised their new products. Many deserts were sold in instant powders that could be mixed and cooked quickly.
People also began to buy refrigerators, meaning that they could buy food in larger quantities, instead of going to the shops every day.

Reading

additives
Since the 1950s, agricultural production has been in full swing. New technologies have caused the production of grain to skyrocket around the world. Meat is now produced on giant, macro-farms and more people than ever eat meat daily. Scientists developed
additives, which are used to keep crackers, cookies and bread fresh for a long time. New farming processes mean we can eat any fruit or vegetables at any time of the year.

Reading

sustainable
Many people worry that the new practices of producing food are not healthy or sustainable for the earth. There has been a recent movement to buy organic food, free from chemicals and also only buy produce that is in season and grown locally. Many people have
become vegetarians, or vegans because they disagree with the way meat is produced. It will be interesting to see how the production of food continues to change in the future.
