initiative
Rock Glen Care Centre was the site of an innovative new initiative created by local senior Jerra Hamal. On Monday, during the hours of 4 to 6pm, the senior high school students who enrolled in the Generous Generations visited the senior centre. For two hours, they shared stories and activities with the residents at the centre for seniors aged 65 and up.

curriculum
“It’s a really great project,” Jerra told this reporter. “The idea is that the seniors suggest activities they want to do. Some have chosen card games, others cooking or painting. I think a few chose to do aerobics and another wanted to learn how to crochet. Then the students pair up with them and they design the curriculum together. The best thing about it is that anyone is invited. If other students, or family members or anyone from the community want to come one day and participate, that is totally fine.

go-getter
Jenna is also involved in planning the afterschool program for young primary students who otherwise might go home to empty houses. She has been working with Mr. Handstuck to get other teachers and students who are interested in volunteering for the program. “She’s a really hard worker and has shown that she is dedicated to the people in the community. She’s a real problem solver and go-getter,” says the teacher.

abandon
“I didn’t get elected for student council, but that didn’t mean I was going to abandon all of my ideas. I saw a real need in the community and I worked to fill that need. I think in the end, these projects will help deal with the problems of loneliness and bullying in the high school as well. I hope my peers will realise the importance of personal relationships in this digital world.”
