This past Saturday morning saw a flurry of activity in the high school. Local student Laura Pelliz organised an event to clean up the back field and the area that connects the field with the river. Over fifty student volunteers arrived at nine in the morning, dressed in old blue jeans and t-shirts. The morning was cool, but with hard-work, the students quickly warmed up. Laura distributed rubber gloves and plastic bags, which had been donated by Swify’s Drug Store.

The students quickly got to work, picking up trash that was strewn around the large field. They then continued on to the bank of the river. They were able to clean the area all the way to the Precious Bridge. While the students were picking up trash, the maintenance crew was installing a large state of the art recycling centre that can also be used after baseball and soccer games.

“The recycling centre is great,” said student volunteer Adaran. “I’ve had a lot of picnics out here and it’s really easy to forget to pick up your trash because there was no where to put it. The closest trash cans used to be all the way next to the school doors, and it was usually full.” The rubbish and recycling will be collected weekly by the city’s rubbish department. The school asks all of the citizens to continue to pick up and recycle their trash in all zones of the city.

“I really feel like we have made a difference here, and I hope the students continue to use the recycling centre and keep the area clean. I plan to monitor the area once a week to make sure it stays clean. I am prepared to plan another clean-up day if needed,” Laura told this reporter. At the end of the long day, the volunteers were rewarded with a delicious ice cream sandwich, donated by Cremaldo’s Ice Cream Shoppe..
