Hello, my name is Laura and I would like to submit my name as a candidate for student council president. I am a straight A student, who has always tried to make this school as good as it could be. I strongly believe that this senior class could make a big difference in the school, and in the community as well. I have noticed a huge problem with litter on the school grounds and I think it is time we buckle down, and start to fix it.

My platform this year is based on the protection of the atmosphere and the restoration of the environment around the school. I would like to eliminate all of the single-use plastic bottles in the vending machines and replace them with refillable bottles that can be bought with tokens in the student store. Just this simple act will prevent a lot of unnecessary waste.

I’d also like to address the state of the backfield behind the baseball fields. This area is a popular place for students to have picnics and enjoy the afternoons watching sporting events. However, there are no trash cans in this area, which means that a lot of food wrappers, plastic bags, and bottles are left out in the middle of the field. The students deserve to have a clean area to enjoy, and it is up to us to keep it clean.

I propose that we install trash cans at the entrance and exit to the field and begin a campaign to encourage everyone to throw their trash away when they leave. I believe that our students will chose to throw the trash away if given the opportunity. I also propose that we begin the year with a special event to clean up the field and the area that leads down to the river. I think it is time to show the community that we intend to take care of our school.
