What part of the city was affected the worst by tourism?
Janice pulled her car into the narrow street that led to her office building and immediately came to a complete stop. Cars were lined up in both directions as far as she could see. She tapped her fingers on the steering wheel and wanted to back up and take a different road, but someone was already behind her and she was trapped. Traffic inched forward slowly and Janice watched the clock tick closer to the time she needed to be at work. She was going to be late again.

“You had good foresight,” Vanessa agreed. “It helps to have connections at the town hall,” Fred answered. “I heard the mayor wanted to build a new art gallery and then when Banty donated that beautiful sculpture, I knew the city was going to be nominated for the best tourist destination in the country.” “And if you hadn’t bought the design, you know Carl would have,” Vanessa said. They both looked out the window towards Carl’s souvenir shop just across the street.

Paul pulled his street cleaner onto Main Street and almost dropped his coffee when he saw the state it was in. Plastic water bottles and cardboard coffee cups were strewn all over the wide, beautiful street. There were old receipts from souvenir shops stuck in the flower pots and piles of old papers, chips wrappers and plastic bags blowing into the gutters. Paul sighed and pulled out his broom. The street cleaning machine could pick up small amounts of litter, but there was no way it could deal with this level of rubbish.

Victor arrived at the visitor centre a little after eleven. His face was flushed and he was out of breath from running across the park. “Victor! There you are,” shouted out his coworker, Amber. “You’ve got another group waiting right outside.” “Another group?” Victor spluttered. “I’ve already done three this morning. I need to take a little break before I go out again. It’s quite hot this morning.” Victor sat down on the hard chair behind the counter. opened up a bottle of water and sipped it slowly.

"I’m really, terribly sorry, but the mayor won’t be back until this afternoon. You can stay here and wait for her, or you can tell me the problem and I’ll make sure she calls you as soon as she is back. “I’m Peter Jannsen,” the man scowled. “I live in the building that is behind the new sculpture. I want to make an official complaint.” The clerk clicked a few buttons on her mouse and tried to smile, “Go ahead then. What’s the problem?”

“Karyn, Jim, sit down a minute. I’ve got a complaint here we need to discuss,” the chief pulled some papers from a pile and looked them over before she continued. “A Mr. Janssen made a report last night at ten o’clock about a party going on outside his building. Why did no one respond?” Karyn looked at Jim for support before she took a deep breath and began to explain. “You have no idea about the chaos that is going on out there, do you?” The chief gave her a questioning look. “Why don’t you try to explain it to me?”
