What are some reasons you might call the police?
The station was in a state of turmoil when Karyn arrived at work for the afternoon shift. The lobby was filled with people looking lost, confused or upset and phones were ringing on every desk. Karyn hadn’t started yet and she was already exhausted. Her partner was filling out paperwork at his desk while he waited for their assignment. “The chief wants to talk to us before we go out today,” he said as a greeting. “Let’s get it over with, then,” Karyn responded and the two officers went to find the chief.

“Karyn, Jim, sit down a minute. I’ve got a complaint here we need to discuss,” the chief pulled some papers from a pile and looked them over before she continued. “A Mr. Janssen made a report last night at ten o’clock about a party going on outside his building. Why did no one respond?” Karyn looked at Jim for support before she took a deep breath and began to explain. “You have no idea about the chaos that is going on out there, do you?” The chief gave her a questioning look. “Why don’t you try to explain it to me?”

“First of all, the streets are so crowded that it is difficult to even walk across the street. With all of the tourists packed together and not paying attention, the pickpocketers are rampant. We’re getting three or four reports an hour. We’ve also got people constantly stopping us to ask directions, ask for places to eat,” “Ask for a ride to the bus station,” Jim finished with a wry smile. “We are completely overwhelmed out there.” “Not to mention the lost children, the small cuts and bruises and the people who just generally want to complain about something,” Karyn said.

“I remember the complaint,” Jim admitted. “It was third on our list, so we had to go to break up a fight in front of the bar and then calm everyone down.” “And then there was the broken window on Juniper street,” Karyn continued. “Somebody threw a brick, but we’ll never find out who.” “And by the time we got up to the sculpture, the partiers had gone home,” Jim said. "There was glass all over, so we alerted the street cleaners, but they are overwhelmed with work as well.” The chief sat silently for a few moments, thinking about what to do. “This can’t be,” she finally stated. “I’ll see if I can get some more officers out on the street with you. I’ll go right now to talk to the mayor.”
