I believe that the biggest danger on the internet right now comes from cyber bullying. You can find cyber bullying in every corner of the internet. Even sites that say they are bully-free zones and have rules and guidelines for participation are not free from bullying. This is a problem that appears to be impossible to stop.

To start with, social media is a haven for bullies. I don’t know if people are actually so mean in real life, or if they feel insecure, or if they are just bored, but the amount of mean, insulting comments on social media is incredible. It seems like some people just use social media to find strangers they can put down and abuse.

Bullying is also rampant within social groups of people who know each other. In school settings, for example, I often hear of the group ganging up on one student to send them insulting messages about their intelligence, appearance and body. This bullying often includes photos or videos where someone might be doing something embarrassing. Sometimes the bullying is done to try to get another student in trouble at school or with their parents.

Social media can be a wonderful tool, however it is important to take steps to decrease bullying. If the bully is a stranger, it is best not to engage, and simply block that person from communicating with you. If bullying is occuring with people you know, let an adult or a friend know. Cyberbullying is not acceptable and we must all work together to try to stop it. I'm speaking at the high school this Friday, if you want to learn more about this topic.
