Reading
bullied
Holes by Louis Sacar is a realistic fiction novel, with a few elements of fantasy. It tells the story of Stanley, a shy, awkward, overweight boy who is often bullied by his classmates. Stanley comes from a family that was long ago cursed with bad luck. When Stanley is convicted of a crime he didn’t do, he is sent to a camp for juvenile delinquents.
Reading
gruelling
Hot and gruelling is this camp. It is not even so much a camp as it is a place where children are forced to dig holes in the sweltering sun. After a few weeks, Stanley becomes friends with the other campers and gradually gets into shape and gains self-confidence and strength.
Reading
ulterior
It is when the manager of the camp asks them to find things in the holes that Stanley suspects that she has ulterior motives. Cruel and heartless is the manager while she waits for the campers to find something. She only becomes happy when the campers find a tube of lipstick. When one of the campers runs away, Stanley decides to rescue him, even though it means leaving the relative safety of the camp.
Reading
authority
Dramatic is the way the book wraps up multiple stories to show how the characters are connected. The characters in the story learn about friendship and justice in both the present and the past. They learn and how to deal with the manager and her abuse of authority. It is rewarding, the ending is, when all of the characters get what they deserve.
What is Stanley's problem before he goes to the camp?
