Is it important to always obey the rules?

Reading

obedient
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is a fantasy novel for young adults which retells the famous fairytale of Cinderella. The book takes place in a magical realm, filled with fairies, trolls, and a handsome prince. The main character is a young girl named Ella, who was given a "gift" when she was born. A fairy gave her the gift of always being obedient. This makes her have to do everything anyone tells her to do.

Reading

servant
However, it doesn’t turn out to be such a great gift, this obedience. Ella’s family falls on hard times and her father marries an evil, rich woman so that he doesn’t lose everything. When she goes to live with her stepfamily, Ella's stepsister discovers that Ella will always do whatever she tells her to do. Ella becomes a servant in the grand house and has to cook and clean for her step-family. It seems like no one can help her.

Reading

charismatic
Throughout the book, Ella also develops a relationship with a funny, charismatic prince. Ella loves his fun spirit and charming nature. He loves Ella's sense of humor and goofing around with her. Unfortunately, due to the gift Ella has, it is doomed, their relationship. Ella is afraid that if she marries the prince, someone will use her to control the kingdom or even possibly kill her own husband and gain power over the land.

Reading
