Hi Kat, Things are finally starting to look up here. I decided to take a different approach to life and start out each day with a new goal. Last week my goal was to talk to at least three people (and you know how hard that is for me, since I am such an introvert). Well, it paid off. I talked to three different girls and now have plans to study with one of them tonight and I am going fishing with the other two on Saturday. I hope they don’t mind that they will have to teach me everything about fishing.

I also decided to see if I could join the band or the show choir. The show choir conductor did not have a great reaction to my request, because so many people had tried out and he didn’t think it was fair to let me in just because I was new. But, the band conductor was thrilled with my interest in music. He said that since I already knew music theory, I could choose a band instrument and still come to practice while I was learning. So, now I am going to play the french horn.

I still haven’t found anyone to run with me, but I have figured out a new route that takes me from the school to the grocery store, where I can go off the road and run next to the stream. I got to see all of the leaves that are getting ready to fall and the last remnants of the summer flowers. I am going to ask mom to buy me some new shoes that are more suitable for trail running and see what other parts of nature I can discover.

In response to your last message, I know I am responsible for my happiness, and I hope you can see that I am trying to make the best of it. I still miss you and the apartment building and the school tremendously, but I have realised that there are positive things here, and I am only going to enjoy myself if I am willing to try them. Thank you for your help with this change. I can’t wait for you to visit me in winter.Mary
