Why do you think people might want to eat insects?
edible
There are over two thousand species of edible insects on the earth today, including butterflies, beetles, ants, bees, grasshoppers, crickets and cockroaches. Some people even eat dragonflies and cicadas. Already over two billion people in the world eat insects daily. Eating insects is not yet popular in the western world, and numerous companies are working to change this.

Reading

teacher tips

appetising
Insects are being ground into flour, fried, and seasoned to make them more appetizing for people in North America and Europe. They have a high nutritional value and provide protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Some insects are high in fat and have many calories, which makes them a good choice in places where food is scarce.

Reading

specialised
Edible insects are raised on specialized insect farms and produced with strict standards of hygiene. The insects are raised from eggs to adults and then killed using temperature control. They are then freeze-dried and packaged whole or turned into flour. This flour could be used to create food products such as baked goods, breads, or snacks. Some companies are even making hamburgers and ice cream with insect flour.

Reading

awareness
A company in Belgium has even created The World Edible Insect Day, held on October 23rd, to bring awareness of the possibilities of insect consumption in the world. Insects are already a popular, healthy food product in many parts of the world, and many scientists believe that in the future they will become a necessary food source as global warming threatens our traditional crops.
