Have you ever seen a ladybug?
larvae
Ladybugs are a species of small beetle found in all parts of the world,” Jenna read from her phone. “They are considered beneficial insects because they eat small bugs and aphids, which are pests in gardens and agricultural fields. They often lay their eggs directly on top of these aphids to make sure that their larvae have something to eat as soon as they hatch. Females lay 10 to 50 eggs on each plant, and in one season, each ladybug can lay up to one thousand eggs.

variations
Ladybugs can be yellow, orange, or red in color and usually have small black spots on their wing covers. They have black legs, heads, and antennae. There are over six thousand variations of the design of the spots on their backs. Some ladybugs have stripes instead of spots, and some have no decoration, with a simple round, dull brown body and short legs. There is one species of ladybug that is a bright yellow color with twenty-two black spots.

Reading

invasive
The ladybug will also attack and eat large moths, which cause serious loss of crops, so farmers are always glad to see ladybugs in their fields. A ladybug can attack caterpillars and eat their larvae as well. Because they were so helpful to farmers, many species of ladybugs have been imported to new places around the world, which has caused them to become an invasive species. They now compete with the native species of bugs and cause disruption in the ecosystem.

Reading

swarming
In recent years, the ladybird has had its population reduced by over 20 percent, due to changes in their environment and the arrival of other invasive species. Sometimes ladybirds have become pests as they must compete to find food, and began eating the plants they used to protect. Large groups of ladybirds can also be seen swarming on the side of warm buildings and trying to get inside when it is cold outside.
