How would you feel if you had to wear a uniform every day?
I’d like to take a moment to say that I completely disagree with Mr. Altern’s opinion on the school uniform policy. I believe that school uniforms are an antiquated tradition that no longer has any place in a modern school. We now know that social and emotional wellbeing is just as important as academics in a secondary school, yet a uniform works against this wellbeing.

As teenagers, these students are just beginning to discover who they are and need to have the opportunity to express themselves in a safe environment. I believe that the uniform policy actually restricts the freedom of expression that these young adults deserve. I believe that T-shirts that show the students’ interests and sports wear to support their teams keep the students motivated while at school and creates talking points among their friends.

The uniform policy also does the students a disservice, as they are not given the opportunity to make choices about their outfit and they will not learn how to choose appropriate clothing in their future jobs. The ability to make appropriate decisions is a key factor to show that a young adult is becoming more mature. Students who are forced to wear the same uniform every day are robbed of an opportunity to make a very important decision every day.

I hope that my statements have been enough to convince the school board to rethink the uniform policy and allow the students to improve their mental well-being, strengthen their individuality and express themselves as they wish. I urge the school board to abolish the uniform policy at the secondary school.
