After Georgia was caught, the teachers started to pay attention to what the students were wearing on their feet. The gym teacher caught nine girls wearing colored socks and sent them all to the principal. The principal only had four more pairs of extra socks
to pass out, so the other girls were forced to go without socks. At the end of the day, there was an announcement on the loudspeaker saying that anyone caught wearing anything but plain white socks would be immediately suspended.

Many of the students were worried about the principal's threat and didn’t want to continue wearing fun socks, but Michael urged them on. “They can’t suspend all of us,” he assured them. The next day, Ms. Schneider watched the teenagers like a hawk when they came into her classroom. She pointed at
Nate’s bright green socks and sent him to the principal's office. As soon as Nate was gone, Kelly flashed her orange socks and was sent outside as well. Michael lifted his trouser legs as he sat down and Ms. Schneider frowned. “Alright, that’s it. Anyone not wearing white socks needs to leave immediately.”

Twenty four out of the twenty six students stood up and left the room. They gathered in the hallway and walked together toward the principal's office. A large crowd of students was already in front of the principal's door and more students were joining the group every minute. The group was quiet and some students were afraid of what the principal would do
when she saw them. However, there was also an air of defiance among the students. The headmistress came out of her office and saw the group of students. She took a deep breath and pursed her lips. “What on earth is going on here? Are you all here for uniform violations?” At first nobody spoke, but they could all see that the headmistress was becoming furious.

Finally, Michael moved to the front of the group and said loudly. “This is a protest. We have been wearing crazy socks all week because we are tired of uniforms. They are degrading, dehumanizing and meant to teach us that our individuality isn’t important. The senior class will continue to wear
socks of our choosing until you agree to get rid of the mandatory uniform.” When he finished, Michael was almost shaking. He had never stood up to an authority figure before and he had no idea what to expect now. He looked around and found his classmates nodding in agreement and was comforted by their support.
