The Firepenny role inside HQ
- Ensure that your designated zone is clear of obstructions and hazards.
- If you have someone in your zone who requires assistance to evacuate the building, they will need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). These are stored with Working Life and must be kept up to date.
- If an employee with a PEEP moves from your zone to another, let their new Firepenny know.
- You are identified as a Firepenny by the pink Hi-Vis jacket, there are multiple jackets per zone on the coat stands.
- If you get a newbie on your team, make sure you show them where the nearest fire exit is.
- During evacuation, inform employees they must leave the building, direct them to the nearest safe exit.
- Liaise with other Firepennies in your zone to ensure that it is clear in the event of an evacuation.
- Identify if anyone in your zone is unaccounted for or needs assistance to exit the building.
If you hear the fire alarm
- Put on the pink Hi-Vis jackets located on the coat stands , give clear instructions to the other Firepennies in your zone.
- Start evacuating everyone in your zone using the nearest and safest exit.
- Clear your zone starting at the furthest point away from the exit.
- Check under and around all desks to make sure that the area is clear.
- Ensure that all rooms in your zone are empty, including toilets, storerooms and welcome call booths, closing the door when you are satisified that it is clear.
- Check and clear any areas that are an extra responsibiltiy of your zone e.g. Boardroom, Treehouse etc.
- Make sure that you and the other Firepennies are the last people to leave your zone and make your way to the Fire Assembly Point.
Fire Assembly Points
The Firepennies role at the Fire Assembly Point
- The Alarm Response Team (ART) is comprised of the C-Suite and the Leadership Team, they will be wearing yellow Hi-Vis jackets.
- One Firepenny from each zone should confirm to the ART at the fire assembly point that your designated zone is clear.
- Also, notify the ART if any employees from your zone are unaccounted for.
- If needed, notify the ART of any employees who require assistance to evacuate the building or if anyone is refusing to leave.
- Firepennies must then wait with their department at the assembly point, until they are told by an ART that it is safe for them to re-enter the building.
- Once an ART has confirmed that it is safe, Firepennies or ART's can advise all other employees that they can return to the office.
Visitors
- If you are a Firepenny hosting a visitor, instruct a colleague to escort them to the Fire Assembly Point.
- They must wait with them until the Reception Team in the blue Hi-Vis jackets are present.
- They can then hand them over to them to be looked after.
- Once the visitor has been handed over, your colleague must join their department group at the assembly point.
Firepennies Personal Safety
- It is not the responsibility of a Firepenny to force employees to leave the building. If someone refuses to do so, you must inform the ART at the assembly point.
- Don't be a hero! A Firepenny should not risk endangering their own safety.
- Firepennies must not enter an area where smoke or fire has been detected, even if that area is their designated zone.
- Firepennies should only use a fire extinguisher if they have been trained to do so and if they feel confident to use one.
- Firepennies should also consider whether the size of the fire is appropriate for you to tackle with an extinguisher or whether it needs to be left to the Fire Brigade.
Procedures
- The fire evacuation procedure will be practiced in zone groups annually, to ensure that Firepennies are aware of what they need to do and where they need to be.
- Fire training will be completed annually by all Firepennies.
- Firepennies will be updated of any changes to the Fire Safety Policy that affect their role.
- Any changes to the fire safety procdures will be shared on Workplace and the current Fire Safety Policy is stored there for everyone to access, as well as in the Social Hub on People XD.

We have 2 Assembly Points at Moneypenny HQ.However, in the event of an evacuation we would always use Assembly Point A which is situated next to the bees. We would only ever use Assembly Point B if we were unable to use Assembly Point A, for example if the smoke from the fire is billowing over that area.
This is an Evac Chair, they are located in several of the emergency stairwells at HQ, as outlined on the floorplans.
In the event of an emergency, they are used to assist someone with a PEEP to evacuate the building safely.
Some Firepennies are trained in how to use the Evac Chairs and will be there to assist where needed during an evacuation.
