Working at the flax mill, 1841

Mary Bucktrout is a fourteen year old girl. She works in the card-room at Mr. Holdsworth's flax mill in Leeds. She met with an accident while taking out some waste flax from the machinery, by order of the overlooker; ‘who,’ she says, ‘threatened to fine me sixpence each time I did not keep my machine clean!’

She lost her right arm below the elbow and the thumb of her left hand. Her boss gave her one shilling to make up for her injury. Her father, a poor man with five children, has to support her. She has worked in the same mill for two years.

After the flax mill, 1842

Mary is currently at St. John’s School under the care of Dr. Hook, the vicar of Leeds. She is being trained to manage an infant school. I was very pleased to see her read and write.
