The Rock Cycle

The rock cycle is the process where rocks are made, broken down, and transformed or changed over time.

The rocks on Earth now will eventually break down and become another rock in the future. This process happens over and over!

Birthstones

Birthstones are gems that are associated with certain months of the year. These gems form or are found in igneous and metamorphic rocks.

  • Igneous – amethyst, aquamarine, peridot, sapphire, turquoise
  • Metamorphic – emerald, garnet, ruby, topaz
  • Both – diamond, opal
  • Neither – pearl (not a stone - come from mollusks)

Igneous Rock – Obsidian

Obsidian is a glass-like igneous rock that forms when magma cools quickly.

Besides natural beauty, obsidian can be used to create extremely sharp blades.

For these reasons, humans have used obsidian for thousands of years for tools, weapons, jewelry, and art!

Sedimentary Rock – Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock that forms when sediments are compacted together.

Humans use limestone for many things. Here are just some of its uses: cement, concrete, building stones, glass, paper, plastics, agriculture products, cleaning products, toothpastes, and make up!

Metamorphic Rock – Marble

Marble is a hard and strong metamorphic rock that formed from extreme heat and pressure.

Humans use marble for construction and things like marble floors, fireplaces, and counters.

Many famous monuments and works or art are also made of marble!
