Your Health Is Your Priority
Once students recognize they are unwell, what are common on-campus resource that are available to them? Additionally, how can students determine if their issues require counseling or a lower level of services outside of the counseling department. This chapter will cover: • The 13 most common health and wellness departments found on college campuses • Defining the difference between wellness versus well-being • When do I need counseling or coaching?
Understanding Counseling
- Focuses on both the past and the present
- Therapy can help heal wounds & trauma from the past
- Treats a mental health or substance abuse problem (which includes everything from severe issues to minor, short-term issues such as adjustment disorders)
- Because therapy treats mental health or substance abuse problems, it's generally covered by insurance and health savings accounts
- Client has decreased level of functioning
- Master's degree required for license & Licensing is required by law
- Typically generated through illness or dysfunction
- Diagnostic
- Healing for maladaptive behaviors and recovery from past traumas
- Relieving psychological suffering
- Sometimes covered by insurance
- Unfortunately stigmatized
- Practitioner seen as an authority
- Explores cognition and psychological impact on wellbeing
Understanding Coaching:
- Focuses on setting & and achieving goals in the present and future (doesn't deal with the past)
- Coaching does not involve a mental health diagnosis
- Coaching helps mentally well people function at a higher level
- Is NOT covered by insurance or health savings accounts
- There is no licensing or particular training or credential required to work as a coach
- Coaches often work online as they aren't limited to working within a state-issued license like a therapist
- Generally, more acceptance of coaching, less stigma
- Confidentiality not protected by law
- Orientation on solution and capacity for change
- Achievement focused/goal-oriented
- Certification and credentialing are strongly encouraged
- Assesses client readiness to change
- Clients are viewed as already whole when entering a coaching relationship
- Change is self-developed
