Making Connections
Connectivism is student-center-based learning. Knowledge is shared between other learners. Students can dive deeper into a topic and exchange current ideas with peers. (Alzain, 2019)
Malcolm Knowles
- An American educator
- Popularized Andragogy concept of learning
George Siemens and Stephen downes
- Technology changing education
- Supports technology and media in education
Learning occurs in a cooperative environment. The Topic should be relevant to the learner. Learning objectives are created with students’ needs, interests, and skill levels in mind. Adult learners need to collaborate with an educator for support. (Corley, 2024)
language and Interaction
Children learn through speaking and engagement with adults or peers. Children learn by observations and active dialogue between teachers or classmates. (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016)
The learning process goes beyond the traditional classroom. Technology and media are additional sources to use while seeking knowledge. Online learning is used to enhance the student-centered learning process. (Alzain, 2019)
Adult Learners have life experience. Adult learners are self-directed, self-motivated, and ready to gain knowledge. (Montauredes-Kakalos, 2023)
Students are encouraged to collaborate on group projects. Students are learning through social networks. Students use websites, blogs, wiki, chats, and databases to gather information and collaborate within a group. (Alzain, 2019)
Knowles believes that self-directed learners tend to retain what they have learned. Therefore, supporting long-term memory. Meaningful information will make a long-lasting impression on the brain. (Montauredes-Kakalos, 2023)
Zone of Proximal Development
Learning occurs when a child is supported by an adult. The zone of proximal development is what a child can learn within a certain range. Children learn by watching people's actions and conversations. (Palm, 2024)
Lev Vygotsky
- Phycologist and Teacher
- Theory of language and cultural transmission
- Learning comes from interactions with one's surroundings
- He believed that children could gain language before a specific state of devlopment.
Memory
The learning process uses short-term memory. Children will model those around them to understand their environment. (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016)
Cultural and social interactions are crucial in the development of a child's intelligence. Language is obtained from the child's environment. Scaffolding guides the child to meet their full learning potential. Learning transpires within the Zone of Proximal Development. (Palm, 2024)
Adult learners are: Self-directed, motivated, have prior experience, determined, and ready to learn.(Montauredes-Kakalos, 2023)
The memory muscle is constantly working. The advancement in technology is moving at a rapid rate. Students are very interested in technology which makes learning meaningful. Therefore, the learning process leaves a long-lasting connection. (Alzain, 2019)
