The UK's health and safety regulations are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which has the authority to investigate incidents, issue enforcement notices, and prosecute non-compliance.
The UK has a comprehensive legal framework for occupational health and safety, with a focus on protecting workers and preventing workplace accidents and illnesses. The primary legislation is the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, which outlines the general duties of employers, employees, and other parties to ensure a safe work environment.

Hazard
Risk
Accident
Near Miss
This is an event that could have caused harm but didn't.
This is an event that resulted in harm.
This is the likelihood of harm occuring to how serious that harm could be.
This is something that may cause harm.
Unsafe conditions encompass physical elements within the workplace that have the potential to cause harm.
Unsafe acts refer to actions or behaviors that deviate from established safety protocols.
Employer Responsibilities
Employee Responsibilities
Effective health and safety management begins with a thorough process of hazard identification and risk assessment. This involves systematically examining the workplace to recognize potential safety risks, evaluating the likelihood and severity of those risks, and then implementing appropriate control measures to mitigate them. By taking a proactive approach, organizations can protect their employees and create a safer work environment.

Safety Inspections
Safety inspections allow employees to proactively spot and report any hazards or non-conformance that can lead to an incident. A safety walkaround is a process where managers, supervisors, or technicians tour their own areas of work to: Identify potential hazards Assess safety measures Engage with workers to create a culture of safety Observe equipment in action Note environmental safety Get employee input

Incident Reporting
It's important that everybody reports accidents, near misses and cases of ill-health. Reporting should take place inside your organisation and sometimes things have to reported by your employer to outside agencies too.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Why is PPE Important?
First Aid
The purpose of first aid is to provide immediate help in the event of an injury or ill-health.This immediate action can save lives or prevent a condition getting worse. There are notices on site telling you where to find first aid assistance along with the names of those who have been trained to give first aid.Defibs available on various locaions on site and in the First aid Room.

DSEAR - Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) require employers to control the risks to safety from fire, explosions and substances corrosive to metals.DSEAR applies whenever: there is work being carried out by an employer (or self employed person) a dangerous substance is present (or is liable to be present) at the workplace the dangerous substance could be a risk to the safety of people as a result of fires, explosions or similar energetic events or through corrosion to metal

Accident Reporting
Hazard Awareness
If an employee is involved in or witnesses a workplace accident or incident, they have a responsibility to report it to their employer in a timely manner. This helps ensure proper investigation, treatment, and prevention of future occurrences.
Employees should be aware of the potential hazards in their work environment and take appropriate steps to mitigate risks. This may include following proper procedures, using safety equipment, and reporting any unsafe conditions or behaviors.
Active Participation
Employees are expected to actively participate in health and safety activities, such as training sessions, safety meetings, and workplace inspections. Their input and feedback can help identify and address potential safety concerns.
Compliance
Employees have a duty to comply with all health and safety policies, procedures, and regulations set forth by their employer. This includes following safe work practices, using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, and reporting any hazards or incidents.
Understand the potential dangers of electrical currents, including shocks, burns, and fire hazards. Learn to identify electrical hazards in the workplace, such as exposed wiring, damaged cords, and overloaded outlets.

Follow the limits as much as possible to reduce the risk of injury. For heavy or bulky items, work with a partner or team to lift and move the load safely. Coordinate your movements and communicate clearly to ensure a smooth and controlled lift. Always try to use a mechanical aid to lift and move items.
The minimum first aid provision in any workplace is:
- A suitably stocked first aid box
- A nominated person to take charge of first aid arrangements
- Information for employees about first aid arrangements
Requirement
Health and Safety Policies
Effective workplace health and safety policies must be established, communicated, and consistently enforced by employers. These policies should outline clear procedures, responsibilities, and expectations to promote a culture of safety and accountability.
Safety Training
Employers must provide comprehensive health and safety training to all workers, covering topics such as emergency procedures, safe handling of equipment, and risk mitigation strategies. This empowers employees to work safely and recognise potential dangers.
Workplace Safety Oversight
Employers have a legal and ethical responsibility to provide a safe working environment for their employees. This includes conducting regular inspections, identifying and addressing potential hazards, and ensuring compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.
Follow safety protocols when working with electricity, such as turning off power sources before servicing, using insulated tools, and avoiding wet or damp conditions. Implement lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidental re-energization.
Ensure all electrical equipment is properly grounded and maintained in good working condition. Use only approved, well-maintained tools and appliances, and replace any damaged or faulty items immediately.
An employee will generally be considered a DSE user if they:a) normally use DSE for continuous or near-continuous spells of an hour or more at a time andb) use DSE in this way daily andc) must transfer information quickly to or from the DSE andd) also need to apply high levels of attention and concentration, or are highly dependent on DSE, or have little choice about using it, or need special training or skills to use the DSE.e) Use DSE when working at home on a permanent basis or long-term basis, also when routinely split their time between their workplace and home (hybrid working).
DSE (Display Screen Equipment)
DSE is a device or equipment that has an alphanumeric or graphic display screen, regardless of the display process involved. The definition includes both conventional display screens and those such as laptops, touchscreens and other similar devices.
Safety Checks
Safety Checks are carried out by Team Leader, Manager of a department in other department to that they work in. This will be done every month with respect to availability of the person carrying it out.
Forklift Pallet Truck
Utilize mechanical aids such as pallet trucks, forklifts when possible to minimize manual handling. These tools can reduce the strain on your body and make moving heavy or awkward items easier and safer.
Maintain a wide, stable base of support and keep your back straight when lifting. Use your leg muscles to lift, keeping the load close to your body. Avoid twisting or reaching while lifting to prevent injury.
