Information for Educators

Definition:

Oppositional Defiant Disorder involves an ongoing pattern of anger, irritability, arguing and defiance toward parents and other authority figures that interferes with daily life.

Symptoms:

  • generally begin during preschool
  • frequent and ongoing (at least 6 months)
  • cause problems with relationships
  • angry and irritable mood- easily loses temper
  • argues with adults or authority figures
  • refuses to follow adults' requests or rules
  • upsets others on purpose
  • vindictive / seeks revenge- tries to hurt the feelings of others
  • blames own problems on others

Strategies for Successful Teaching of Students with ODD:

  • set reasonable limits and consequences
  • step away when overwhelmed to avoid conflict
  • work with the student to solve problems collaboratively
  • prioritize the most critical issues
  • reward prosocial behavior and ignore antisocial behavior
  • be empathetic- do not dismiss student's feelings- let them know you hear their concerns
  • avoid overreacting
  • ignore challenging questions and redirect to issue at hand
  • avoid power struggles
  • make personal connections
