The Future of Teaching with an

"Teacher's Would Use This"

Remember

There are interactive elements throughout the website. Any circles with dots, links, and numbers are clickable. If you forget which options can be clicked, there will be a finger icon beside all clicable elements.

There are always times when we have a student in our class who is struggling or there is an issue that requires us to contact their guardian. Before reaching out to the guardian or consulting colleagues for more information, it would be beneficial to have a mobile application where all relevant information about the student is readily available at the teachers' fingertips.

Communicating with home is difficult, let's make it better.

Summary

info

This application will enable teachers and administrators to record and manage the following information about students and their communication with guardians:

  • Student Behavior and Helpful Solutions
  • Guardian Communication (including date, topic, and relevant details)
  • Helpful Accommodations
  • Grades and Absences

A brief overview

What will this app do?

The teacher will log into the application, where their students' names are automatically populated by connecting to an existing application or website with the student data.Within the application, teachers can input information into specific categories: student behavior, general student information, accommodations, grades and absences, and guardian communication. This information can be entered as comments or checklists. Teachers will also have access to custody information, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), attendance, medical information, and all comments made by previous and current teachers.

" Experts have identified several causes of teacher burnout, including inadequate workplace support and resources; unmanageable workload; high-stakes testing; time pressure; unsupported, disruptive students; and a wide variety of student needs without the resources to meet them. "

Most, if not all, teachers have a smartphone, and many have a smartwatch. When they notice an issue or are in the middle of grading, it would be extremely convenient to look up student information on a phone or watch for instant access. Additionally, having all documentation readily available would be helpful when talking to colleagues, administration, or parents. Teachers need to spend less time on menial tasks to make their jobs easier to handle and give them more breathing room.

Why Mobile?

Mobile Usability

As a teacher, you often feel isolated, especially when struggling to connect with a student or struggling to know if you are doing enough or the right thing. This application will allow teachers to share major circumstances that occur in their classrooms and learn how they have been handled. For example, if a student is extremely silent and does not complete their work in class, it would be helpful for teachers to know if this behaviour is common, how their colleagues dealt with the situation and/or what strategies parents suggested.

Always Questioning

Is It Just Me?

Communicating with parents is essential in teaching and building rapport. It is also very stressful. Knowing when a parent was last called, the topic discussed, and how the conversation went makes this communication more effective. By using the app to document information, teachers can quickly enter notes from phone calls or emails. This process is simple and efficient, with the added benefit of accessibility tools like voice-to-text.

With all applications, there are some difficulties that could present themselves. Here are some possible app issues:

  • Teachers not using the application
  • Teachers not getting the attequate training
  • Algorithm mistakes (ie. current student names are not accurate)
  • Security issues (student data breaches)
  • Administration tracking teacher behaviour in a negative way

Possible

App Issues

Working in any type of field, there are observations and communication needs. This app could easily be modified to be auto filled with employee or client information. The following are some ways the app could be used in the corporate world.

  • Employee / Client Profiles
  • Communication Logs
  • Behavioural Notes
  • Task Management
  • Meeting Notes
  • File Attatchments
  • Integration with Applications

This application would work on both Android and Apple devices including phones and smart watches. It would also be accessable by computer.

Compatability

By selecting specific input and output categories, the process becomes quick and efficient.

This ensures that only the students in a teacher's class will be listed and that all sensitive information remains secure.

The ease of inputting and viewing information makes the application mobile-friendly.

As a teacher, I often encounter students who need extra support, whether behaviorally, emotionally, or academically. Frequently, I lack information about their specific needs and what strategies other teachers have implemented to help them. This often requires me to email their previous teachers to gather necessary information to assist or address situations effectively. Additionally, it's challenging to determine the best times to call parents, understand their reactions to different situations, and know which topics to avoid or include in conversations. All of these issues and frustrations would be resolved with this application.

Why this app would help me as a teacher.

Background Info

While collaboration is not direct, this app facilitates collaboration by allowing users to document their thoughts and experiences and view their colleagues' documentation. Making the app accessible on both phones, tablets, and watches will increase the likelihood of this type of mobile collaboration.

Mobile Collaboration

"The fact that large and bulky hardware can hinder non-verbal communication (R2) and the environment of the field trip require a light and mobile solution" (Simon et al., 2022).

Student names can be sorted accordingly and all names will be searchable.

Without data, there is no baseline and no information available to help education move forward.

Data helps teachers and administrators determine where students are in their learning journey and identify where interventions are needed. Understanding where behaviors started, who was involved, their attendance records, and their grades all contribute to furthering the student's success.

Data is Esential

"Data practices, however, are also becoming increasingly important in formal, non-formal, and informal learning contexts including, related educational apps and behavioral class management software" (Krein & Schiefner-Rohs, 2021).

A small change in routine or a minor implementation can significantly alter a student's behavior and learning. By sharing their resources and techniques, teachers can help each other understand how to achieve common objectives and move forward together.

Sharing is Caring

"We all face the same challenges, so make your work public to help others" (Foltos, 2018).

  • Teachers don't know how to use the technology
  • The technology glitches
  • Teachers don't find the technology necessary
  • The technology doesn't load easily

Some of the most common reasons why teachers won't use technology are:

UXD is NEEDED

If we want teachers to be using the app, they have to WANT to use the app.
