CLIL, or Content and language integrated learning, is an innovative approach, allowing students to live the language in a structured and specific context (living the language for the language).

In CLIL, a content is taught in the foreign language and this holistic method fosters deeper understanding, improved language skills and enhanced critical thinking abilities.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an educational approach that combines the teaching of subject content with language learning.

By understanding CLIL, educators can enhance language acquisition while teaching various subjects, fostering a more integrated learning experience for students.

What is CLIL?

CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning. It is an educational framework that promotes the simultaneous teaching of a subject (like science, history, or mathematics) and a foreign language. This method encourages students to learn a new language in context, making the learning process more engaging and effective.

Key Components of CLIL

1. CONTENT: The subject matter being taught (e.g., geography, biology). 2. Language: The target language being learned (e.g., English, Spanish). 3. Cognition: The cognitive processes involved in learning, such as critical thinking and problem-solving. 4. Culture: The cultural context that enriches language learning and content understanding. ...and now there's a 5th c, as well: COMMUNITY! This addition emphasises the importance of social interaction and collaboration in the learning process. By integrating Community, CLIL encourages learners to engage with real-world contexts, connect with others beyond the classroom, and develop a sense of global citizenship. This shift highlights the role of education in fostering not only linguistic and cognitive skills but also social responsibility and intercultural understanding.

Benefits of CLIL

Enhanced Language Skills: Students improve their language proficiency through practical use in subject contexts. Increased Engagement: Learning through content makes language learning more relevant and interesting.
