Introduction

A quick introduction before you start this interactive presentation. You will be presented to the PLM and its essentials elements. Elements, you will learn into deep later on. To ease the understanding of the subject handled here, a context has been given. You will be initiated to the Product lifecycle management and its essential elements through a specific product: a bike. Enjoy yourself & learn plenty!

The Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)

A quick summary

A product within a PLM project

The Product Life cycle management

A product's success is not only determined by its design or functionality. It’s also essential to consider its production process, the sourcing of its components, its maintenance and more. A PLM sotware provides the context, security, traceability, and processes needed across enterprise teams and systems. For it enables geographically dispersed, multidisciplinary teams to strategically collaborate with partners and customers using trusted, up-to-date product digital information to streamline product development. Product lifecycle management is the foundation for a digital thread strategy. It is composed of 5 main phases.

PLM Phases

Design

The Manufacturer defines how the bike is produced following specific work instructions.

The company manage the recycling or the destruction of the bike and its components.

The designer and engineer outline how the bike is designed through 3D drawings and simulation.

The Manufacturer specifies how it is maintained.

> which action at what frequency, on which components using and with what ressources.

The list of requirements of the new bike is established.

A product within the plm

From the hunch (meaning the first thought and/or idea of the concept) to the recycling of the product, the bike, a specific approach needs to be taken. This approach, made from 5 phases (seen previously), is composed and structured around activities, events and digital representations.

EVENTS

ACTIVITIES

Digital Representations

A pLM project implies ... different activities

An activity is an action done within a PLM phase to anticipate the steps of a product life, which may change depending on the client. An activity influences the creation upto the recycling of the product, a bike here. There are two main types of activities:
Related to the produced physical product
Related to tasks performed in the PLM software

Definition of the list of requirement.

The designer defines how the bike is designed.

The manufacturer defines how the bike is maintained.

The manufacturer defines how the bike is produced.

The manufacturer defines how the bike is recycled/destroyed.

The bike is recycled.

The bike is maintained.

The bike is produced.

A plm project implies ... different events

An event is a trigger to pass from one PLM phase to another, except the first event. Each event may differ from a client and a project to another.

A plm project implies ... different digital representations

A digital representation is always used to support all PLM activities in the PLM software. It is used to characterise any aspect of the product - from all the identified requirements to the process of recycling the product, including production locations or business stakeholders.

Attention: Some digital representation designations and definitions may change from one customer to another.

This is a global view of all the elements we saw in this E-Learning. It collects all information of phases, activities, events and digital representations.

The elements on the top of the screen (the darker ones) define how it is plan to handel the product. The others (lighter ones) allows the follow up of each actual product produced.

A QUICK SUMMARY

The Product Lifecycle Management is made from 5 phases: Define, Design, Produce, Maintain and Recycle.

An activity is an action done within a PLM phase to anticipate the steps of a product life.

An event is a trigger to pass from one PLM phase to another, except the first event.

A digital representation is always used to support all PLM activities in the PLM software.

Depending on the customer, designations and definitions of activities, events and digital representation designations may change.

Repair/Rework/Retrofit

During the production Phase, some products could need to be "retouched".There are different types of "retouching":

  • The rework is a complet process or operations set which are performed again on a product (chemical bath for surface finishing)
  • The repair is an other set of operations to correct the defect (replacement of brocken door to a car)
  • The retrofit is a modification performed on a product to achieved a new design (the designer provides an updating version of its product and it is decides to catch up this new version of design on already produced product
These modifications can be applied on the production work order itself or during dedicated rework order.
