Leadership Identity

Crafting your leadership Identity Statement Developing your leadership identity is about clarifying who you are as a leader and the change you would like to create in the world. It's about answering the question: "Who am I as a leader and what am I working towards?" Your answer to this question should be informed by each of the 4 elements of your leadership identity:

  1. Values
  2. Strengths
  3. Social Positionality & Consciousness
  4. Social Causes & Pathways
After spending time exploring each of these elements, write your own leadership identity & vision statement by answering the question above! Consider how each of the 4 elements inform your answer by simply filling in the blank when answering the question: "Based on my ____ who am I as a leader and what am I working towards?" Example: Based on my values, who am I as a leader and what am I working towards?

Values Your values are a foundational piece of your leadership identity because they give your leadership purpose and direction. In leadership, your values serve as your "why." Values-based Leadership involves 1) clarifying and 2) applying our values on both an individual and collective level. Strengths

Strengths By intentionally applying your strengths to your leadership pursuits, you can take your leadership to the next level! Make your leadership identity strengths-based by focusing on your unique strengths (talents, skills, knowledge/wisdom) and the unique strengths of others. Doing so empowers each person to be their best and makes you more effective at creating the impact or change you wish to see. Factoring this element in:"Based on my STRENGTHS, who am I as a leader and what am I working towards?" Request or attend our True Colors: Leadership Styles & Group Dynamics workshop to explore your personal strengths, the strengths of others, and how they can be leveraged in your leadership!

Social Positionality & Consciousness

Social Positionality & Consciousness Your social identities, positionality, and consciousness are key elements of your leadership identity because privilege and power often influence who is viewed as a leader and who has access to leadership opportunities, especially as traditionally defined. Since leadership is about creating a more just and equitable world, we must consider social identity, privilege, and power in our leadership pursuits. You can make your leadership identity socially conscious by: 1) examining your social identities and becoming more mindful of your positionality, 2) showing cultural humility and being sensitive to the identities & experiences of others, and 3) by leading in more inclusive ways that support people in experiencing belonging & empowerment. Factoring this element in:Based on my SOCIAL POSITIONALITY & CONSCIOUSNESS, who am I as a leader and what am I working towards? Request or attend our Socially Conscious Leadership workshop to reflect on your own identities and positionality, consider that of others, and identify ways to make your leadership identity more socially conscious!

Social Causes & Pathways

Social Causes & Pathways Your leadership identity should be action-oriented, which means it's important to consider the causes/issues you care about and the actions (pathways) you can take to create the change you wish to see in the world. You should consider how your values, strengths, and social positionality might inform the causes that are important to you and the actions you take to address those causes. Factoring this element in:"Based on my SOCIAL CAUSES & PATHWAYS, who am I as a leader and what am I working towards?" Request or attend our Pathways of Public Service & Civic Engagement workshop to consider the many actions and pathway(s) you might take in pursuit of your vision for a better world!
