The origin and evolution of ems!
A Brief Historical Review
Start
Summary
During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the need to mobilize injured soldiers from the battlefield to a field surgeon gave birth to this nation's first "field hospital" or ambulance.
Summary
At the end of the war in the spring of 1865, the utility of this new mode of medical transport migrated to the civilian world, first appearing at the Commercial Hospital and Lunatic Asylum of Cincinnati, that same spring. James R. Jackson was the first individual employed as an "ambulance driver," receiving an annual salary of $360 from the hospital.
the nation's highways were more dangerous than the battlefield!
A century later, the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Committee provided recommendations for:
- Ambulance standards
- State-level policies and regulations
- Methodology for providing consistent ambulance services at the local level
- Adoption of national curricula, regulations, and training
Public understanding - 1972
The ubiquitous reference to "John and Roy" in the EMS industry is not an accident. Television was the social media in those days and the TV show "Emergency" was the first series of its kind to introduce and explain the Firefighter/Paramedic profession.
Today's EMT certification courses require more instructional and clinical time than did the first paramedic programs of 1969.
