Present Simple Tense

Understanding and Using the Present Simple in English

Introduction

  • The Present Simple tense is used to describe habitual actions, general truths, and fixed arrangements. It is one of the most commonly used tenses in English.

Structure of Present Simple

  • Affirmative: Subject + Base Verb (+s/es for third person singular)
  • Negative: Subject + do/does not + Base Verb
  • Question: Do/Does + Subject + Base Verb

Uses of Present Simple

  • 1. Habitual actions: I walk to school every day.
  • 2. General truths: Water boils at 100°C.
  • 3. Fixed arrangements: The train leaves at 6 PM.
  • 4. Instructions: You turn right at the next corner.

Adding 's' or 'es' to Verbs

  • 1. For most verbs, add 's': He reads.
  • 2. For verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, or -o, add 'es': She watches.
  • 3. For verbs ending in a consonant + y, change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es': He studies.

Negative Form

  • To make a negative sentence in the Present Simple, use 'do not' (don't) or 'does not' (doesn't) before the base verb:
  • I do not (don't) like spinach.
  • He does not (doesn't) play football.

Questions in Present Simple

  • To form a question in the Present Simple, use 'do' or 'does' before the subject:
  • Do you like pizza?
  • Does she play the piano?

Practical Examples

  • 1. He goes to work by bus.
  • 2. They don't eat meat.
  • 3. Does it rain often here?
