Calendar: Counting days, talking about upcoming events reinforces basic math skills and introduces time concepts Sorting and Matching Games: sorting objects helps with classification skills and reinfoces vocabularyMovement Breaks : helps students release energy and refocus without complex instructions
Multiplciation Table: repetative practice of isolated skills like multiplication tables or writing the alphabet in order are examples of cognitively undemanding and context reduced activities in an Elementary Classroom.Color by number and cut on the dotted line are other examples in this quadrant.
Hands-on Science experiements provide context for analyzing results and drawing conclusions. Story-based math problems require applying math knowledge to scenarious in which context must be understood. Reader's Theater allows students to perform a written text - practicing reading expresively and considering character motivations and traits.
Graphic organizers that are left open for students to place objects and ideas into categories based on thier own critera. Creative Writing from an open-ended promt Debates on abstract concepts like happiness or courage requires students to define terms and formulate arguements
Cummings Quadrant
Low Context High Cognitive Demanding activities such as creative writing and organizing objects into student created categories are examples of objects that require learnes to grapple with abstract concepts with minimal context cues. High Context Cognitively demanding activities like hands on science experiements, reader's theater and solving word problems in math require more complex thinking in familiar situations. These quadrants help teachers to balance challenge with support and scaffold learning by gradually increasing cognitive demaind wtihin a familiar context.
A framework that shows how context and congitive demand affect langauge aquisition. It divides langauge learning activities into four quadrants. Context Embeded, Cognitively Undemanding is often where learners begin. These activities are routine-based with visual and social cues. Low Context, Cognitively Undemanding are activites where the context is still supportive like color by number but the mental challenge increases. Activities like multiplication facts and cutting on different pathways are common in an Elementary Classroom.
