Lesson 4:

It happened to us

Lance Bass – “I wasn't one of those physical bullies, I never punched a kid, never pushed anyone down, neverstole anything from someone. When you're 13, 14, you just go along with what the other people are doing. You just want to fit in. You want to make sure that your friends like you. So, you're going to crack jokes, you’re going to laugh along with it. And when you're a teenager, you're not really thinking, 'Oh, I'm being a bully by laughing along with it.'...But you're also a bully by condoning the behavior and making the jokes along with them. I addressed a message to the boy I bullied. It is important to say sorry when you’re guilty.”

Rihanna – “I got teased my entire school life. What they were picking on I don't even understand. It was my skin color [which was lighter than her classmates]. Then when I got older, it was about my breasts. But I'm not victimized—I'm grateful. I think those experiences were strategically put together by God for the preparation of being in the music industry. It's so easy for me to deal with the [problems] now.”

Lady Gaga – “I was teased for being ugly, having a big nose… “Your laugh is funny”, “You’re weird”, “Why are you so into theatre?”. I used to be called this or that. I didn’t’ even want to go to school. Once the boys of my school picked me up and through me in the trash can on the street. On the corner of my block while all the other girls of the school could see me in the trash. Everybody was laughing, and I had that nervous giggle. And I just remembered holding back the tears and lip quivering and I remembered one of the girls looking at me like “are you about to cry? You’re pathetic!” Being bullied has taught me the importance of spreading kindness in the world because it’s something that we can fix.”

Demi Lovato – "When will people understand that verbal abuse is just as serious as physical abuse? How many precious lives will it take to put an endto the hurt caused by cyber abuse? I think that some peopleuse bullying as a way to fit in, and I've noticed it's not just the "cool" kids doing it anymore. Sitting behind a computer gives people a sense of anonymity, but everyone needs to realize that words—even the ones they write online —have a strong power to hurt people."

Questions: Read your document. Sum up the story. What happened? What type of bullying is it about? What is the moral of this testimony ? Present it to the class. Take note when the other are presenting you their celebrity's testimony.
