EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON EXTREME WEATHER
Many of these extreme weather events often occur in conjunction with each other. In some regions, heat waves and droughts are becoming more frequent simultaneously, and this trend is expected to persist as global temperatures rise. Similarly, flooding events are likely to increase due to the combined effects of intense rainfall from storms and rising sea levels, which will heighten the potential for damage along coastlines.

Hot and dry conditions increase the likelihood of wildfires. Dry vegetation acts as fuel, enabling fires to persist once they start. As global temperatures rise, wildfires may become more common and severe in certain areas, posing a threat to lives and property.
Warmer ocean temperatures and increased moisture in the atmosphere can lead to more intense and prolonged rainfall from tropical cyclones. Hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical cyclones are also raising the risk of coastal flooding due to higher sea levels and more pronounced storm surges. Additionally, these storms have a higher likelihood of rapidly intensifying.
Since 1950, the occurrence and severity of heat extremes have increased mainly due to human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. This includes record-setting high temperatures and hazardous heat waves. As the planet continues to warm, these events are expected to become even more frequent and intense.
Global warming can cause severe heat waves in the ocean. Marine life, including corals, may not be well-adapted to these elevated temperatures and can suffer or die during prolonged heat waves. Like heat waves on land, marine heat waves are expected to become more frequent and intense as Earth's temperature rises.
The increased water vapor in the atmosphere means that some already wet areas will become even wetter. As precipitation levels rise, they may overwhelm the capacity of both natural and man-made drainage systems, resulting in damaging floods. Additionally, rising sea levels will exacerbate flooding events in coastal regions.
With rising global temperatures, ocean warming and the melting of land ice are causing sea levels to rise. This results in higher high tides, increasing the risk of flooding even during sunny weather. This phenomenon is already observable in some coastal cities, such as Miami and Bangkok.
As the Earth warms, some already arid regions are becoming even drier. Higher temperatures cause increased evaporation of surface water, which turns into water vapor in the atmosphere. Since warmer air can hold more moisture, this sets up a cycle of further warming and additional evaporation. With reduced surface moisture, the frequency and severity of droughts are expected to rise.
As Earth's temperatures rise, the warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor, leading to more intense rainfall, snowfall, and other forms of precipitation from storms. Heavy precipitation is already becoming more frequent and will likely increase in both frequency and intensity with rising global temperatures.
