Welcome

Managing Director´s Letter

I am pleased to present the 2023 Responsible Business Report for Macmillan Education Iberia. A document that reflects our achievements, initiatives and efforts in sustainability, in line with our commitment to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Augusto Di Marco

Managing Director Macmillan Iberia SAU

This year, we are especially proud, grateful and privileged to be part of a publishing house with the prestige, history and heritage of Macmillan Education, which is now celebrating 180 years. As part of our commitment to disseminate the goals of the 2030 Agenda among the educational community, Macmillan Education relies on the Advancing Futures and Change Makers programmes —key initiatives to introduce global citizenship, sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion topics into classrooms worldwide. These help teachers share knowledge, develop skills, and promote attitudes and actions to achieve a positive and lasting change. They engage students with key elements of the SDGs, empowering them to work towards a fairer, more sustainable future. Aware that I cannot address all relevant aspects of Ethics, Social and Environmental (ESG) matters in this letter, I would like to highlight four that are particularly significant for us: artificial intelligence, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), accessibility, and our commitment to net zero emissions by 2040.

Welcome

Our commitment to artificial intelligence aligns with our mission to provide advanced tools that help ensure our students' academic and professional success. In this regard, this year we set up a team in which different areas work together to establish the procedures that regulate artificial intelligence and address it from an ethical perspective. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are strategic priorities, and we strive to promote them both through a range of programmes with our staff and also in the content and educational material we publish. Internally, we are very mindful of this in our recruitment processes, training pathways, DEI mentoring programme, internal employee networks, and use of inclusive language in our communications, among other aspects. Our aspiration to be a leading publisher in the field of accessibility is particularly relevant, ensuring we align with European Directive 2019/882 on accessibility requirements for products and services, which will come into force in June 2025. We are currently adapting our products and services in different working groups, with teams working from different perspectives to comply with this regulation. In environmental matters, particularly noteworthy is Springer Nature Group's commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040 for both its operational and value chain emissions. I would not wish to conclude without emphasising that all these achievements would not have been possible without our human team's contribution, for which I reiterate my gratitude. We will continue to implement responsible business and sustainability actions aligned with our Group's commitments. Without a doubt, sustainability will remain a firm priority for Macmillan Education Iberia throughout 2024.

Risk management

The Risk Policy sets the principles and general framework for controlling and managing company risks in order to make the best decisions. The risk management and control system in the Iberia region is structured into three levels, ensuring the participation and involvement of all staff in risk management, from the highest responsibility levels (GRC Committee members) to the lowest (risk managers). Each of these risks is assessed according to its likelihood of occurring and possible impact, and has a series of associated controls for mitigation. The evolution of risks and compliance with established action plans are reviewed periodically.

The risk organisation and management model in the Iberia region is supervised using a Crime Prevention Model as a guide, which includes the tools in place at Springer Nature and appropriate monitoring and control measures to prevent criminal offences and/or significantly reduce the risk of them occurring.

Our supply chain

We strive to have a competitive supply chain that is both sustainable and maximises quality publishing, printing books and educational materials, as well as their distribution.

To achieve this goal, the company has numerous tools at its disposal:

Global Purchasing Policy and Local Procurement Procedure for Purchases

Where the commitments to suppliers are described with the aim of maximising value for money, minimising risks and ensuring communication and coordination between stakeholders.

Whistleblower channel for third parties

Code of Conduct for business partners

In 2023, the Macmillan Iberia website introduced access to Springer Nature's whistleblower platform ("Speak up") for suppliers, contractors, and partners. This facilitates reporting any suspected breaches of the Code of Conduct by Macmillan Education.

Where suppliers are required to comply with all legal standards and are encouraged to exceed them in human rights, working conditions, health and safety, anti-corruption, and environmental protection. And also to ensure that measures are taken to guarantee compliance with these standards in their own supply chains. When registering a new supplier, an initial due diligence questionnaire is conducted; based on the responses, SNICS assigns additional questionnaires concerning risk, labour standards, anti-corruption, anti-bribery, and data protection. The tool assigns a risk level based on the type of product or service contracted, the amount of expenditure and the country of the supplier. The SNICS system uses alerts to notify the Compliance Officer if a critical point requiring clarification with the supplier has been identified.

Additionally, Springer Nature also has a programme of audits to verify that these partners comply with the required labour regulations and standards. In 2023, the warehouse service that Macmillan Education outsources, was subject to this audit, which focused on reviewing aspects of health and safety.
