Introduction to ENGL 1301
WHAT IS ENGLISH COMPOSITION AND WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Start
Introduction
Now that you have learned how this course will function and the purpose of it, it's now time to wade into the waters. ENGL 1301 is taken by most students at LSC-Kingwood and is considered a course with skills that translate to other courses. For example, writing a five-paragraph structured essay will help in other classes, such as History or Philosophy. The critical thinking component helps with Math or the Sciences. Writing a thesis, the parts of an essay, or writing MLA citations helps with computer programming (writing code) and attention to detail. Indeed, the skills in a freshman composition course go beyond that one English class.

The Nuts and Bolts
In this section, you'll learn about the different formats of the class, including delivery and time constraints. The video lesson on the next page also discusses the overarching themes for these classes, regardless of how they are taught and who is teaching them. Why is this important? Because these are the basic bones on which a typical ENGL 1301 class is built. Knowing the approach of an ENGL 1301 class will help you understand how best to help an ENGL 1301 student.

Let's Talk About Essays
02
Essays, essays, essays
The essays are the bread and butter of any English class. This is, by far, where the students will ask for help the most -- on their essays. For ENGL 1301, students will write at least four essays. Depending on the professor, students could write fewer essays but more shorter writing assignments.
Here is a complete list of essays that professors must choose from. Again, students are responsible for learning, executing, and mastering only four essays. These essays are listed in the frameworks document and the order, which you will receive later in this lesson.

What are frameworks?
03
The Frameworks and You
In this section, we will discuss the ENGL 1301 framework. You'll get a tour of them and get your very own copy.
What are frameworks and how does that impact you?
As explained in the previous lessons, the English department uses framework documents (called frameworks) to design their classes. The document contains the essays to teach, a list of those essays, and corresponding chapters and readings from the textbook. While full-time faculty members can use any book or OER resources they would like, adjunct professors or part-time faculty must use the prescribed textbook. The book is The Bedford Guide for College Writers with Reader, Research Manual, and Handbook 13th edition, and the Student Companion accompanies it. Classes that also use this book are required to purchase Achieve, where some of their homework may be turned in. Both the Bedford Guide for College Writers and the Student Companion are available at the reserves desk in the Learning Commons

Themed Courses
04
What are themed courses?
Some 1301 courses are themed. This means several things, but in general the class is developed around one idea or theme. For example, Professor Brinkman's class centers around the theme of "Love and Loss". Some classes, like one of Professor Gutierrez's classes, was developed for one of the workforce programs. This means all assignments and materials are related to these topics. Some courses are also paired with other courses to develop a learning community. For example, the Honors Program's ENGL 1301 class focuses uniquely on writing the honors project papers and the class requirements. Some students from the Honors community take that class in addition to other Honors classes. Some courses are paired with co-req courses. As explained earlier, these are courses that are paired with a one-hour development course in reading or writing. This could mean that the same students who are in the co-req English course are also in the same 1301 course.
What is important here is that you ask the student what kind of class they are in along with the assignment. It could help you understand the requirements placed upon the student and how best to approach the assignment together.
