Los grupos estratégicos son los grupos que forman varias empresas que siguen estategias similares dentro de un mercado.

• Simplifican la heterogeneidad de una industria.
• Facilitan el estudio de la rivalidad.
• Analizan sus fortalezas y debilidades, así como de sus amenazas.
• Simplifican el análisis de la evolución del sector por medio de estudios longitudinales.
• Ofrecen una explicación de las diferencias de resultados existentes entre las empresas.

Las barreras en los grupos estratégicos

Las barreras estratégicas son el resultado de las acciones emprendidas por las empresas que forman el grupo estratégico para impedir que otras empresas muestren su interés en entrar en él. Los mecanismos que impiden el movimiento de empresas entre grupos han sido denominados barreras a la movilidad.

. Aunque las barreras pueden ser iguales, también pueden ser asimétricas, pues el que tengan algo de ventaja sobre ellas, hay menos competencia. Las empresas que quieren cambiar de giro, o aumentar sus precios, se pueden salir de su grupo estratégico y entrar a otro. Normalmente los grupos se hace por su similitud en precio, servicios, variedad de producto y publicidad.
