The main characters are the same / have not changed. Tom is unsuccessful and Jerry is fearless, even if he’s much smaller than Tom. They’re still enemies and they’re always fighting. Tom is always chasing Jerry, Jerry always escapes, and he plays clever tricks on Tom, who is unlucky as usual.

Tom is a cat and Jerry is a mouse. They are enemies. Tom is strong but Jerry is very clever. Their first short film was in 1941, by the American animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. In the short films, Tom doesn’t want Jerry to live in his house. In the new film, Jerry is living in a hotel in New York City. The hotel manager doesn’t want Jerry to live there. Kayla (Chloë- Grace Moretz) wants a job as an assistant organising a prestigious wedding*. She promises to make Jerry leave. She persuades the manager to employ Tom. But Jerry likes living in the luxurious hotel. He doesn’t want to leave.

1. Read the text.

They have a mouse problem.

Recap

I can see Tom and Jerry in the foreground. I think they are in New York because there's a yellow cab on the left and there are skyscrapers in the background. They are riding a skateboard. Tom is at the back, he looks scared and he's holding it tight. Jerry is in the front, he looks determined and fearless. I think they are chasing someone or maybe they are trying to escape the blue car on the right.

Kayla thinks she will catch Jerry (easily). She wants to hire Tom, she calls him an exterminator, because cats catch mice.

Maybe / I think / I presume they’re going to work in this hotel / maybe they’re going to live there.

- At the beginning we see Tom and Jerry just before they start a new life = They’re about to start a new life. - When we first see the hotel, a very expensive wedding party is going to start very soon = The hotel is about to host “the wedding of the century.

It’s New York.

The hotel manager is afraid of Jerry and he doesn’t know what to do.

Tom and Jerry are together. Tom is dragging a suitcase. Jerry is walking near him. He has a backpack (rucksack).

1. I think Tom is going on holidays because he's dragging a suitcase.

2. I suppose they're shaking hands to say goodbye.

3. Maybe Tom is at the bus-stop because he's waiting for the bus. They look sad.

4. I imagine Jerry wants to hug Tom because he likes his friend.

Kayla is over-confident, she thinks she has solved the problem / managed to get rid of Jerry.

We can see the Statue of Liberty.

They’re on a country road. There’s a bus stop, so I think they’re going to take a bus.

The chef is furious and determined to get rid of Tom and Jerry.

They shake hands. Jerry pretends to be running to Tom because they’re friends. Tom is happy and he runs to (towards) him. He doesn’t see the bus coming and the bus crashes into him. Jerry thinks it’s funny.

It’s a luxurious hotel, an expensive hotel.

Maybe they’re going on holiday by bus. They seem to be best friends (the best friends in the world ).

I think it’s strange (surprising, unbelievable). They’re usually enemies. Maybe they’re not enemies any more (they’ve become friends).

It looks expensive, with big lights and plants everywhere. This hotel has been host to four presidents, three popes, two kings; it means that a lot of rich and important people have already stayed in this hotel.

1. Tom is dragging a suitcase. Jerry is walking with him and he's carrying a backpack.

2. They're shaking hands.

3. Tom is at the bus-stop and Jerry is leaving.

4. Jerry looks happy. He wants to hug Tom.

How do you know?

There’s a bar on the left / in the background. There are some tables in the right-hand corner. There’s a piano in the front / in the foreground.

c. Who are the three characters? What can you say about them in this picture?

Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse are there. They look angry / ready to fight. There’s a girl / woman in the middle. She probably works in the hotel, she’s wearing a uniform. She looks angry too.

“I shine under pressure, like a diamond ...or Rihanna...hahaha”: she’s trying to be funny.

TranscriptVoiceover: After a lifetime of being the world’s most famous enemies, Tom and Jerry are about to start over in the big city.Hotel manager: This hotel has been host to four presidents, three Popes, two kings and we’re about to host the wedding of the century. Human Resources manager: Do you think you’re qualified to take on this position? Kayla: I shine under pressure, like a diamond, or Rihanna. Human Resources manager: One other thing... we have a mouse problem. Kayla: Wh...wh...what now? I’ll catch it sir. Oh wow, this is so detailed. We could hire an exterminator, or we can leverage millions of years of predatory evolution. Hotel manager: If a picture of this mouse is twitted out to InstaBookFace or TikiTok, we will be ruined. Kayla: No sir, that is not going to happen. That rodent is toast. Chef: I will not let this hotel be ruined by a cat and a mouse. Hotel manager: He’s toying with us. Kayla: I think I might’ve just pulled this off. Human Resources manager: Really?
