Jarduera bat da, zein gertatzen denari arrazoizko azalpena ematen ahalegintzen dena. Zientzia adarretan banatzen da (fisika, kimika, biologia, geologia...) eta haietariko bakoitzak esparru mota bat du aztergai.

Bere izaera aldatu gabe materiak izaten dituen aldaketak ikertzen ditu. Aldaketa fisiko baten ondotik, substantziek berdinak izaten jarraitzen dute.
Kimika
Materiaren osaera eta haren izaera aldarazten duten aldaketak aztertzen ditu. Aldaketa kimiko baten ondoren, substantziak beste substantzia batzuk bilakatzen dira.
Biologia
Biziaren zientzia da. Organismo bizien ezaugarriak eta portaerak aztertzen dituena; baita izaki bizidunak nola heltzen diren izatera, espezieen bilakaera eta euren arteko eta ingurumenarekiko harremanak.
Geologia
Lur planetako barneko zein azaleko konposizio eta egitura aztertzen dituen zientzia da, bai eta denbora geologikoan zehar jasaten dituen prozesuak aztertzen dituena.
