Adjectives of Number and Quantity

Adjective of number and adjective of quantity, both indicate an amount. We often get confused between the two and assume that both are synonymous with each other.

Adjectives of Number

Adjectives of number tell us how many or in what order the noun is in a series. They can be categorized into three types:

Definite Numeral Adjectives: These adjectives denote an exact number or position.

Adjectives of Quantity

Adjectives of quantity indicate the amount or degree of something but do not provide an exact number. They are often used with uncountable nouns.

Adjectives of Number

Indefinite Numeral Adjectives: These adjectives do not give an exact number but some idea of the amount.

Differences Between Adjectives of Number and Quantity

Adjectives of Number are used with countable nouns, where as Adjectives of Quantity are used with uncountable nouns. Adjectives of Number can be definite or indefinite, providing specific or vague information about the count, while Adjectives of Quantity typically give a general sense of amount or degree.

Distributive Numeral Adjectives: These adjectives refer to individual members of a group. or position.

Adjectives of Number

Here are some examples to illustrate the differences: Adjectives of Number: "There are five apples in the basket." (Cardinal) "She finished second in the race." (Ordinal) "Several students are absent today." (Indefinite) "Each member of the team will get a medal."

Adjectives of Quantity

Adjectives of Quantity: "She has little interest in the project." "I need some water." "There is enough food for everyone." "He has no time to waste."

Adjectives of Number

(Distributive) Adjectives of Quantity: "She has little interest in the project." "I need some water." "There is enough food for everyone." "He has no time to waste."
