Prostate Gland:

Produces a fluid that nourishes and protects sperm.

Fallopian Tubes

Tubes through which the eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus; fertilization typically occurs here.

Vagina

A muscular canal that connects the cervix to the outside of the body; it receives the penis during intercourse and serves as the birth canal.

Epididymis:

A coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored.

Wildcard 50%

Uterus

A hollow, muscular organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops into a fetus.

Wildcard 50%

Testes:

The primary male reproductive organs that produce sperm and testosterone.

Labor and Delivery

The process of childbirth involves three stages. The first stage is the dilation of the cervix, the second stage is the delivery of the baby, and the third stage is the expulsion of the placenta. The baby is born through the birth canal (vagina) during the second stage of labor.

Ovaries

The primary female reproductive organs that produce eggs (ova) and hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

Weeks 17-20:

The fetus develops a fine layer of hair called lanugo and a waxy substance called vernix caseosa to protect its skin. The heartbeat can be heard with a stethoscope.

SC.912.L.16.13 Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the human reproductive system. Describe the process of human development from fertilization to birth and major changes that occur in each trimester of pregnancy.

Weeks 13-16:

The fetus grows rapidly, and its organs continue to mature. The external genitalia are distinguishable, and the mother may begin to feel fetal movements (quickening).

Weeks 21-26:

The fetus continues to grow and gain weight. The lungs develop surfactant, which is crucial for breathing after birth. By the end of this trimester, the fetus has a good chance of survival if born prematurely.

Cervix

The lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina; it dilates during childbirth.

Urethra:

A tube that carries semen out of the body through the penis.

Vas Deferens:

A duct that transports sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.

Fertilization: The process begins when a sperm cell penetrates an egg cell in the fallopian tube. This results in the formation of a zygote, a single cell with a complete set of 46 chromosomes.

Penis:

The organ that delivers semen into the female reproductive tract.

A sac that holds the testes outside the body, maintaining an optimal temperature for sperm production.
