Andragogy comes from the greek words Andr- + -gogy meaning "leading men"

1920

Adult Learner Experience
Readiness to Learn
Self Concept
""Adult learners are generally more inclined to engage in activities when they perceive a direct relevance to their lives" (Feder, 2021). When adults know what the learning outcomes are and how they relate to their life, they are more engaged and willing to learn.
"With maturity, self-concept moves from one of being dependent towards one of being self-directed" (Dwivedi, 2018, p. 881). Adult learners have control over their learning. They choose what they want to learn.
"Adults integrate their personal and professional experiences into their learning process" (Feder, 2021). They draw from their lived experiences to connect new knowledge with prior knowledge. When new and prior knowledge are connected, the learner can understand better and retain more of the information.
Orientation to Learning
Motivation to Learn
Adults learn best when the material is related to their lives and has immediate value (Feder, 2021). For adults learning needs to be learner-centered or problem-centered.
Adults are driven by an internal factor to learn. They are driven by a desire to grow professionally, self-determined incentives, and enhanced performance (Feder, 2021).
Rational for applying Adragogical prinipals When creating professional development
Lorem ipsum
- Adult learners have goals they are hoping to accomplish. Part of their goals is a need to learn and grow professionally. With this need to learn they now have the motivation needed to learn.
- Adult learners want to be in control of what they learn
- Learning must be relevant to their personal or professional life
bEST PRACTICES FOR CREATING AND DELIVERING EFFECTIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- 'Plan and prepare
- Allow for choice
- Treat adult learners like adults
- Discussions and activities
- Begin and end on time
(Aguilar, 2014)
How bias can affect presentation effectiveness
- Greet everyone as they enter the room
- Avoid stereotypes
- Use diverse perspectives
- Cultutral, ethnic, and gender biases can negatively affect the outcome of the professional development for both the presenter and the learners.
- Not using diverse perspectives when putting together professional development may lead to certain groups of people attending to feel left out or even not safe.
- Stereotyping can lead to the presenter believing certain groups of people will not do as well during the professional development.
