Fluid Resuscitation in Sepsis
Clinical Obective: After reviewing the infographic, the learner will understand understand the guidlines and goal of fluid rescuscitation in sepsis.
Preload
Fluid resuscitation increases cardiac preload resulting in increased cardiac output.
Tissue Perfusion
The increased cardiac output allows for better oxygen delivery to organs suffering tissue hypoxia.
A patient that meets sepsis criteria should recieve a fixed dose of 30ml/kg This should be administered during the first 3 hours. This volume can be modified at provider discretion if there is concern for poor cardiac function.
How Much?
What kind?
Crystalloid fluids should be used for resusitation in sepsis.
How does resuscitaiton help?
The hypovolemia that occurs in early sepsis causes altered oxygen delivery.
After the intial resuscitation, some paitent's will no longer be fluid responsive. A passive leg raise test could be done to assess for fluid responsiveness to avoid acumulation of fluid in the tissues.
