A family budget unit is a group of family members who live together and share their income and expensesIt can include:

1. Parents
2. Children
3. Other relatives who live in the same household

• Financial responsibility refers to the obligation of the relatives to support each other financially.
• When a relative lives in the same household and is part of the MFBU, they may be responsible for supporting each other financially.

Spouses are responsible for their spouse

Unmarried parents are NOT responsible for each other

Children are NOT responsible for their parents

Why is the MFBU important?

Medi-Cal eligibility is determined based on the income and household size of the family budget unit. The size of the family budget unit affects the income limit for qualifying for Medi-Cal.
