Teaching Worthwhile Content for Mastery
10
At OVCA, Learning is processing truth—hearing something new, finding a context for that new truth in the mind, enriching that context, and finally making that truth a functional part of who we are. Students internalize content when the teacher delivers lessons with the following ten components of effective instruction:
Student Processing
Independent Practice
Formative Assessment
Guided Practice
Anticipated Needs
Students have a time to work on the material with support. (Also see #6.)
Teacher has built in supports for ELs and other students (Modeling, templates, etc.)
Students are given time to process new input throughout the lesson. Teacher FEEDBACK is key.
Material is mastered through practice, review, and application.
Teacher gauges student comprehension during lesson, practice, etc.
