PRACTICE PLEASE SHOW ME...

Present perfect: it’s not important when something happened

Past simple: we say or ask when something happened

present and past simple passive

...

Someone seems lost. How would you offer your help?

We often use the passive when we don’t know, when it is obvious, or when we don’t want so say who or what is responsible for the action. Or when we want to focus on the "receiver" of the action. A bank was robbed yesterday. (We don’t know who robbed the bank.) The robber was arrested last night. (It’s obvious that the police arrested the robber.) I was told that you insulted my brother. (I don’t want to say who told me.) Jurassic Park was filmed by Spielberg in 1993. (I’m talking about Jurassic Park and not about Spielberg.) As you can see, the object of an active sentence is the subject of a passive sentence. In an active sentence, the subject is the ‘doer’ of the action and the object is the ‘receiver’ of the action. And in a passive sentence, the subject is the receiver of the action, NOT the doer. Compare: Somebody cleans the classroom every day. (Active) The classroom is cleaned every day. (Passive) A) Somebody broke the window. B) The window was broken (by someone).

ROLE-PLAYTourist: Ask for directions. Resident: Give directions, using the grammar and vocabulary learned. Switch roles.

Useful expressions: *Excuse me. Is there...? / Are there any...? *Excuse me, I am looking for (the) ______. Do you know where I could find it? *Hi. Could you please tell me where (the) _____ is? *Can you help me? I am looking for the ______. Do you know where it is? *Excuse me, where is (the) ______ located? You can use the map on Page 54 , or look for something on Google Maps.

10 min

let's NOTICE

Can I help you? Can you help me? What can I do? How can I help? Can you tell me how to get to the aquarium? Could you give me directions?

Read the questions Am I asking for help? Am I offering help? What are the key words? What expressions can we use to ask for and offer help?

LET'S PRACTICE GRAMMAR!

Meaningful

Competition. Teams. Go to the chat. Ask for or offer help. Be creative.

1. Someone needs help with their homework. 2. You need to know where the supermarket is. 3. You're lost and need help. 4. You want someone to go to the movies with you. 5. Someone is sad. 6. Offer something. 7. Request something.
