Music from the Peruvian jungle

  • Our country has three different natural regions: the coast, the highland and the jungle. Each region has different food, traditions, history and music.
  • Today we will focus out attention on the jungle region and will meet the music instruments and music produced in this part of Perú.

The manguaré

  • The manguaré is a percussion instrument that belongs to the pre-Columbian era.
  • It is used by Amazonian indigenous communities to announce messages.
  • It is made out of two wood pieces.

  • The traditional ceremonial maracas are handcrafted by the Shipibo community.
  • It is Handcrafted with Calabaza, Chonta wood and Achira seeds.
  • Each maraca is decorated with a beautiful and unique patterns.

The quena

  • It is made of bamboo.
  • It is a wooden flute and usually found in the Andes.
  • It is used in the jungle, too.
  • It has 6 finger holes and one on the back.

The rain stick

  • The rainstick is a long tube partially filled with small pebbles or beans.
  • When the stick is moved to one side from another, the pebbles or beans falled to the other end and creates a sound similar to the rain.

The bombo and redoblante

  • It is the rhythmic instrument of Amazonic music.
  • Those are percussion instruments with a membrane made out of sajino or deer leather.
  • The jungle dances are accompanied with the rhythm of these instruments.

  • There are some modern music groups, which produce music that includes jungle music style.
  • The most famous are:
1. Juaneco y su combo: They are the founders of Amazonic cumbia. 2. Bareto. These groups include modern music instruments, such as the electric guitar, the electric bass and electronic keyboard.
