Question Words: Types and Definitions (I)

WHO -Ask about person. -Act as subject of the sentence. EXAMPLES: *Who is that woman? *Who are you calling?

WHICH -Asking about choice. EXAMPLE: *Which sport is better, tennis or football.?

WHERE -Asking in or at what place or position. EXAMPLE: *Where do you live? *Where are my keys?

WHY -Asking for reason, explanation. EXAMPLE: *Why were you late? *Why was he late?

WHEN -Asking about time, occasion, moment. EXAMPLE: *When can I see you? *When did you go to the cinema?

WHAT -Asking for specific thing, object. EXAMPLES: *What is the problem? *What time is it?

HOW -Asking for away, manner, form. EXAMPLE: *How does it work? *How do you travel?

HOW MANY -Asking about quantity. -Used with countable nouns. EXAMPLE: *How many friends do you have?

HOW OFTEN -Asking about frequency. EXAMPLE: *How often do you go to the park?
