Hi, I’m here to pick up Lucas. Could you tell me if he’s already outside?
Scenario 1: Picking up the child from school
“Good afternoon. I help take care of Emma. Could you let me know how she’s doing in class?”
Scenario 2: Talking to a teacher during a parent meeting
You have to ask the teacher what does your host-kid needs for the field trip.
Scenario 3: Preparing for a field trip
Au-pair responsibilities
What should an au pair do if the child forgets their homework? How can an au pair help the child prepare for a school field trip? What should an au-pair do if the child feels nervous before school? How can the au-pair support the child’s learning at home? What should an au-pair say when talking to a teacher or school staff?
In the afternoon, they decide to do a craft project. "We are making a picture with craft materials," Anna explains. They use colored paper, glue, and markers to create beautiful artwork. "Do we have enough craft materials for everyone?" Anna asks, and Emily nods happily. Later, Anna takes the children for a walk in the park. "We need the stroller for Jack," Anna says. She places Jack in the stroller and they head out. At the park, Emily runs around and plays with other children while Anna pushes the stroller and enjoys the fresh air.
“One thing that really surprised me was…” “I’m slowly getting used to…” “Another thing I’ve noticed is…” “So far, I’ve really enjoyed…” “To be honest, it hasn’t been easy to…”

Speaker 1: Excuse me, could you please tell me where the children’s area is?Speaker 2: Of course! The children’s area is on the second floor. You can take the elevator or the stairs on your right. Speaker 1: Thank you! Could I also know what activities are available for toddlers today? Speaker 2: Sure! There’s a “Mini Science Lab” at 11 a.m. where kids can play with bubbles and water. Speaker 1: That sounds perfect! Do I need to register for the activity? Speaker 2: No, you don’t. You can just go there a few minutes before it starts. Speaker 1: Great. How much are the tickets for children? Speaker 2: Kids under four enter for free, and tickets for older children cost six euros each. Speaker 1: Okay, and what time does the museum close today? Speaker 2: We close at 5 p.m., but the café and gift shop close at 4:30. Speaker 1: Thanks for all the information. One last thing — could I leave the stroller in the entrance area? Speaker 2: Yes, you can! There’s a special space near the lockers for strollers. Speaker 1: Perfect! Thanks a lot for your help. Speaker 2: You’re very welcome. Enjoy your visit!
We are going to talk about emotions and homesickness.
1. How do you think you’ll feel during your first week in the Netherlands? 2. What will you do if you feel homesick or overwhelmed? 3. How can you help your host-kids talk about their feelings when they miss their parents or feel sad?
Once Jack is fed and changed, Anna prepares some healthy snacks for Emily. "It's time for snacks. What do you want?" she asks. "I want an apple, please," Emily replies. Anna smiles and says, "I will get the apple. Here you go." After snack time, Anna and Emily decide to play with some toys. "Let’s play with the toys," Anna suggests. They spend some time building towers with blocks and playing with dolls. Then, Anna asks, "Do you want to play a board game?" Emily excitedly agrees, and they play a fun game together.
When they return home, it's time for Jack's nap. "The baby is sleeping with a blanket," Anna whispers as she gently places a blanket over him. She then reads a book to Emily, who listens attentively. "Can you get the blanket for me?" Anna asks Emily, and she helps tuck Jack in. At the end of the day, Anna feels happy and fulfilled. She loves being an au pair and taking care of Emily and Jack. They end the day with smiles and laughter, looking forward to another fun day together.
